Football (also called soccer) has some rules that might surprise even die-hard fans. Here are a couple of interesting ones:
* **Own Goals from Free Kicks:** A player can’t score an own goal directly from a free kick. If they kick the ball into their own net, it’s awarded as a corner kick to the opposing team. This is because free kicks are indirect, meaning the ball needs to be touched by another player before it can go in the net as a goal.
* **Offside Exceptions:** The offside rule can be tricky, but there are situations where it doesn’t apply. A player cannot be offside from a throw-in, corner kick, or goal kick. This means they can be in the opponent’s half when the ball is played and still be considered onside.
* **Goalkeeper Shenanigans:** Goalkeepers have some unique restrictions. It’s illegal for them to handle the ball outside their penalty area if they’ve received it from a teammate’s throw-in or goal kick. They also can’t wear anything with sleeves rolled up, though there’s no clear reason for this rule!
These are just a few examples, and there are other interesting rules out there. The laws of the game can be quite detailed, so there’s always something new to learn about the beautiful game.
